In already a strange day for the GHSA with several state championship games getting postponed, there was a controversial ending to the 3A state championship between Calhoun and Peach Co. at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Peach Co. was attempting to rally after trailing 10-0 and managed to kick two field goals to make it a four-point game in the fourth quarter.
Peach Co. had the ball with about three and a half minutes remaining, and on fourth down decided to take a shot towards the end zone. Noah Whittington caught the pass, and his knee was down at about the 1-yard line. However as he extended the ball towards the end zone, it popped out and the referee ruled it incomplete.
Replays appeared to show it was a catch, but GHSA does not use replay reviews to overturn calls.
Peach Co. head coach Chad Campbell was furious at the sideline, pointing to the haloboard at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to indicate that it was a catch. They had another chance on offense after the incident, but they were unable to score.
Calhoun held on to win the 3A championship 10-6.
Fans on social media posted their displeasure about the call.
