ATLANTA — The newest baby sloth at Zoo Atlanta officially has a name.
The infant, a Hoffmann's two-toed sloth, was born at Zoo Atlanta on August 9
Meet Rolo! The newborn's name aligns with its parents' sweets/chocolate-themed names. Rolo is the second offspring of Nutella and Cocoa. Nutella's firstborn was born on Father's Day last year, according to the zoo.
“We are excited to be able to associate a name with this special infant. For our members and guests, a name can help make a connection to an individual, and a connection to an individual can lead to a connection with a species,” said Gina Ferrie, vice president of collections and conservation at the zoo.
The zoo's sloth care team picked the name out of nearly 2,000 submissions from the public.
The zoo stated in the news release that sloth infants develop faster than their infamous slow movement.
Most sloths are born fully furred with their eyes open and teeth already developed. They also have fully developed claws.
“We look forward to watching Rolo grow up as he helps us tell the story of these fascinating animals and their place in wild ecosystems," Ferrie said.
Rolo can be seen with or near Nutella at the Zoo’s Brazilian Outpost section of the Orkin Children’s Zoo.
Zoo Atlanta posted a video of the full name reveal on Facebook and other social media platforms. See the video below.
