GAINESVILLE, Ga. — For the very first time, the family of a Gainesville High School baseball player who is now in a coma after he was accidentally struck in the head with a baseball bat is talking about their son.
Jeremy Medina is still fighting for his life at Northeast Georgia Medical Center a little more than a week after he was hit in the head with a bat after he accidentally leaned into the batting cage net during hitting drills at the team's indoor facility on Nov. 20.
Jeremy is a senior and played both pitcher and catcher on Gainesville High School's baseball team in 2022.
Now, his family and community are rallying behind him for support. His loved ones are heartbroken, but they are hopeful for Jeremy's recovery and even shared some memories of him -- as his father described him as a leader on and off the field.
"And every time I will tell him, 'You know that not everyone can be like playing sports, working and doing what you do and be able to keep up the grades. Do you know that?' (He says) 'Dad, I don't know, I'm just being me.'"
David went on to say that Jeremy has dreams of becoming a professional baseball player and a youth minister.
Jeremy's family asks for continued prayers for their son's hopeful recovery and thanks their neighbors in the community for their outpouring of love and support.
