Gainesville City Schools officials said that Jeremy Medina's family is asking for prayers during their difficult time.

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — A Gainesville High School baseball player is in a coma after a city school official said he was accidentally struck in the head by a baseball bat Monday afternoon.

A spokesperson said Jeremy Medina, a senior at Gainesville High, was at the school's on-campus batting cages around 1:20 p.m. when he was accidentally hit by the bat. Medina was critically injured and is now stable at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, according to school officials.

Medina is a senior and played both pitcher and catcher on Gainesville High School's baseball team in 2022, a spokesperson with the city's school system said.

"Jeremy and his family are firm believers in Jesus Christ and His redemptive love, and are requesting prayer during this extremely difficult time," Gainesville City Schools said in a statement.
