Atlanta mayor to announce more investments to help those without permanent housing

Recently, the Atlanta City Council approved funding totaling $3.1 million for initiatives supporting those in the city without permanent housing.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens is set to announce new investments aimed at providing support and solutions for those experiencing homelessness on Wednesday.

The announcement, scheduled for 10 a.m. at Atlanta City Hall's Atrium, will bring together key figures committed to combating homelessness, including Councilmember Jason Winston, APD Chief Darin Schierbaum and Cathryn Vassell, Executive Director of Partners for HOME.

Dickens is expected to sign off giving The Gateway Center $700,000 and also Partners for HOME a $2.4 million donation. Councilman Winston, an advocate for community development and human services, sponsored the Gateway Center investment.

"This is desperately needed. We've got people still living outside, and our hearts go out to them," Winston said. 

The funds will be directed towards Gateway's Evolution Center, a low-barrier men's shelter aiming to provide immediate shelter through a harm-reduction model while advocating for more permanent housing solutions.

Atlanta Mayor Dickens, in partnership with Atlanta Urban Development Corporation, also started a project to transform Midtown Fire Station 15 into a mixed-use site, integrating affordable and market-rate housing earlier in January.
