JONESBORO, Ga. — The Jonesboro High School band is set to perform at this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, thanks in part to a generous $20,000 donation from a local entrepreneur and philanthropist.
The contribution will also support the band’s performance at the Statue of Liberty and provide opportunities to explore New York City’s cultural landmarks, including a guided tour of Harlem and Thanksgiving dinner on the Hudson, according to a release.
The band received a check from entrepreneur Ebony Austin on Monday at a pep rally at the school's gym.
Austin is a successful business owner and HBCU advocate known for her community involvement and support for youth and education. She operates several Nouveau restaurants around the metro area, with a Dallas, Texas, location on the way. She also recently launched a line of stone-ground grits sold in Publix grocery stores, where proceeds fund scholarships for HBCU students.
"For our band program, travel is a major part of our educational philosophy. These experiences shape who our students become as adults," Jonesboro High School band director Lynel Goodwin said. "Without the generosity of people like Ms. Ebony Austin, our students wouldn't be able to realize their dreams."
This isn't the first time the Mighty Marching Cardinals have performed on the big stage, either. Dr. Jill Biden also invited the band to perform at the 2024 White House Easter Roll back in April.
Through donations like Austin's, the band is able to continue to perform at invitation-only events like the upcoming Thanksgiving Day parade and the recently announced London 2026 New Year's Day Parade.
