CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A marching beat. The sound of a horn. A danceable tune.
One metro Atlanta high school band performed their hearts out at the White House on Monday.
Decked out in vibrant uniform colors, the Jonesboro High School "Majestic Marching Cardinals" made an energetic debut as they marched to the beat of their own drums -- standing out among the crowd and entertaining those around them.
The school was part of the 2024 White House Easter Egg Roll and received a personal invitation from First Lady Dr. Jill Biden to perform. 11Alive previously reported that Biden surprised the 150 students with a virtual visit last Wednesday during their after-school rehearsal to express her excitement.
In general, the band was one out of four picked to perform at the Easter Egg roll this year. About 40,000 people, including military personnel and veterans, were able to see these students sound their horns and drums.
The White House released a statement last week stating that the band is known for being an "energetic, high-stepping traditional band that brings excitement and unparalleled emergency to every performance."
The band's director, Lynel Goodwin, expressed gratitude for the invitation last week and the opportunities it will bring for the students.
"The Majestic Marching Cardinals band program is built on creating opportunities and experiences for our students. These experiences define who our students become and how they contribute to the world beyond playing instruments,” Goodwin said.
This is not the members' only major appearance. They also recently appeared in Usher's Super Bowl performance commercial and are expected to perform in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
