Water main breaks affecting firefighters in Atlanta

Crews had issues with water supply while battling an abandoned apartment fire.

ATLANTA — Atlanta's water main breaks continue to create obstacles all over the city.

While first responders worked to put out a fire on Neal Place Northwest, they ran into an issue with the water supply.

Despite the water issues in Atlanta, Sam Ragland said things were fine in the Bankhead area.

"We had water. Then, I had water all day and all day yesterday," Ragland said.

All of a sudden, Sunday evening--when he tried to turn on his sink--he noticed an issue.

"You get nothing," Ragland said. "Nothing came out."

The water resources had to go toward putting out the fire across the street. Around 4 p.m., an abandoned, two-story apartment caught fire. Atlanta Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Anarè Holmes said his crews were able to work through the setbacks.

"Each fire has its own challenges," Holmes said. "In this case, because of the environment that we're in, there were water supply challenges, but we always are prepared."

Lamar, DeKalb, and Sumter County firefighters were called in to help.

"What those tankers act as is a hydrant for us--a water source. And so, usually, they're already filled before they come, but, in this instance--where it could be multiple fires on any given day--they have to fill up some of the repaired hydrants where the water is flowing before they arrive on the scene," Holmes said.

Meanwhile, Ragland said he had to regroup for his Sunday plans.

My wife is sort of sick. I'm an old man," Ragland said. "So, we've got to have water. We've got to cook."

One of the latest main breaks was 20 minutes away on West Peachtree and 11th Street, where water was still gushing out late Sunday evening. Atlanta Watershed tells 11Alive that a part needed to continue repairs arrived.

Emory, Georgia Aquarium, Mercedes Benz Stadium, Centennial Olympic Park, and Fulton County facilities are moving back to normal operations with the help of some water bottles and limited fountain use.

But until the work is complete, officials are making do.

"This has been a challenge, being without water," Holmes said. "At times like this, you find out what you're made of. So, we appreciate everybody that's coming together to help."

Holmes said no one was hurt in the fire. The cause is still under investigation.

The boil water advisory will still be in effect until further notice.
