Metro Atlanta businesses welcome customers on Small Business Saturday

Last year, small businesses brought in more than $17 million on Small Business Saturday

MARIETTA, Ga. — It's Small Business Saturday, meaning small businesses all over metro Atlanta are opening their doors to consumers looking to support their local economy and find the perfect gift for the holiday season.

Laurie Prickett of Invest Atlanta said small businesses are the driving force behind local economies.

“We know nothing moves forward without small businesses," Prickett said.

For example, small businesses raked in more than $17 million last year on Small Business Saturday.

And one Cobb County business owner got to open her doors for the first time to see how the day boosts entrepreneurs like her. Viola Lanier of A Better Today Books & Boutique told 11Alive that she sells books for the whole family -- many of which come from local authors. The business website explains how it predominantly offers a collection of books and products that encourage one's well-being.

“When you’re around a book like that, and you actually take that in, get that moment of self-care. I call it soul care, too. Then you really can encourage yourself in the areas you want to be well in," Lanier explained.

This bookstore offers some unique things one may not find in a typical bookshop. There are even specialty rooms and a charm bar where customers can make a specialized bookmark.

“We’re trying to encourage that spa-like feel. It costs a pretty penny to go to a spa, so I wanted to create that serene environment for people," Lanier said.

Lanier’s store is located in Marietta, but Prickett said shops like hers are exactly what communities need to thrive.

“It is our small business community that is flourishing and helping our neighborhoods and helping our city grow," Prickett stated.
