Former nurse, sergeant arrested in Fulton County Jail contraband probe

Four others were arrested earlier in August.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A former nurse contractor and a detention officer sergeant were arrested during an ongoing contraband investigation by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Jail Investigations Unit (JIU) on Friday.

The former nurse, who worked for NaphCare and was assigned to the Fulton County Jail, has been charged with four counts of conspiracy to commit a felony and four counts of possession of prohibited items by an inmate or providing prohibited items to an inmate. The detention officer sergeant faces charges of unauthorized possession of a prohibited item by an inmate and violation of oath by a public officer.

The nurse was dismissed from her position in 2023 after an inappropriate relationship with a jail resident was discovered. The investigation later revealed a conspiracy involving cell phones, implicating the detention officer sergeant earlier this year, leading to their arrests.

In connection with this case, at least one current resident has been charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of prohibited items by an inmate, or providing prohibited items to an inmate.

“The diligent work of our Jail Investigations Unit is to be commended,” said Sheriff Patrick “Pat” Labat. “These arrests are sending a message that criminal activity will not be tolerated in our facility. The JIU will continue to go after these bad actors.”

These latest arrests follow the earlier arrests of four contractors working as security officers at the Fulton County Jail, who were also charged as part of the ongoing contraband investigation. Those individuals employed by Strategic Security face charges, including possession of prohibited items, conspiracy to commit a felony, and improper sexual contact with inmates.

The investigation initially uncovered a series of illicit activities, including the smuggling of cell phones, cigarettes, and other contraband into the facility. These items were allegedly exchanged for payments from inmates. Allegations of inappropriate relationships between the contractors and inmates also emerged.
