Records: Third suspect arrested, accused of handing off gun used in shooting outside McEachern High School

The man was initially a victim in the shooting but later became a suspect after he was released from the hospital.

POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. — A 20-year-old man who was injured in a shooting outside of McEachern High School on Feb. 1 has now been arrested, according to court records obtained by 11Alive.

The man was initially a victim in the shooting but later became a suspect after he was released from the hospital, Cobb County Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer said during a town hall meeting last week. A warrant was then issued for his arrest on Feb. 8, and he was taken into custody on Feb. 15.

Warrants show that the 20-year-old faces a felony charge of carrying weapons within school safety zone and a misdemeanor charge of loitering/failure to check in at school. He allegedly "brandished the firearm before passing the firearm to another party in order to fight a student," according to the warrants.

The warrants also allege the suspect stayed on campus in order to fight a student at school.

He was initially granted a $35,000 bond, but a Cobb County magistrate judge later revoked it because the suspect "poses a significant threat and danger to persons and property in the community."

This is the third suspect to be arrested in this case.

A day after the shooting, police announced they arrested a 17-year-old in Union City who faces charges, including two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm on school property.

Law enforcement said the teenager was a witness to the altercation and alleged that he pulled out a pistol and shot two people. The second arrest was announced Feb. 6,  in which the suspect is a juvenile who police said also opened fire but did not wound anyone. The first two suspects were students at the high school, according to police.

The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. in the school parking lot along New MacLand Road in Powder Springs.

The third arrest came just one day after parents gathered for a second town hall at McEachern, where parents of students from the high school in Cobb County will begin presenting their new school security plan to the school board in two weeks.
