ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police said Thursday that they can only imagine what three guns and masks were for when they stopped a man on a routine traffic violation.
The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety shared a photo on Facebook that showed the handguns, along with three different masks and multiple clips and boxes of ammunition.
"We don't know what this person's intentions were bringing these items into our city, but we're glad our Community Response Team (CRT) made the stop," the post said.
Spokesperson Howard Miller told 11Alive that the driver was actually stopped for an expired tag. They began to investigate further upon smelling marijuana and noticing the nervous behavior of the driver.
According to the police report, which was dated Oct. 1 and happened on Ga. 400 at Haynes Bridge Road, Justin Benjamin Hargrave initially refused to leave his car and only put his hands out the windows asking if he was being detained. The officer said he was being detained due to the smell of marijuana coming from his car. He eventually did exit on his own after a second officer arrived at the scene.
Police found two of the guns on Hargrove during a patdown and a third underneath a hat on the center console. Marijuana was found in a lockbox in the front passenger seat, according to the report.
Miller said the man was arrested on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge and on the expired tag. Police still aren't exactly sure why the suspect had the items, and Howard said that he apparently hadn't provided any further explanation. It was revealed in the report that Hargrove was employed with a security company.
The weapons were held for safekeeping until police can verify whether they were legally owned.
"The things we find when looking beyond the violation during a traffic stop," the Facebook post said.
