ATLANTA — A 20-year-old was placed in custody and faces charges including murder, Atlanta Police said, for his role in a shooting early Saturday morning that left one man dead and another injured.

The shooting happened early Saturday morning on Jonesboro Road in Atlanta's Lakewood Heights neighborhood. APD said officers responded before 1 a.m. to an address that corresponds with Little Bear food mart on Jonesboro Road, and found two men who'd been shot -- a 45-year-old and 38-year-old.

Police said both were taken to a hospital.

"Despite life-saving measures, the 45-year-old would later succumb to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by medical personnel," a police statement said.

APD said a short time after that, they located the 20-year-old, now identified as Bates. He had gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg.

"The preliminary investigation indicates that the three men were involved in the same incident," the police statement said. "Investigators with the Homicide Unit responded to the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident."

APD has not outlined exactly what happened leading to all three men being shot.

According to the department, Bates will be transferred to Fulton County Jail after he is given medical clearance. His full charges include aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, in addition to the murder charge.

A 32-year-old man was also shot and killed outside Little Bear food mart in February 2023.
