Cleveland Avenue sees second fatality in less than a week

One man who heard the gunshots was actually on his way to a "Mothers against Gang Violence" meeting at the Rosel Fann Recreation Center.

A witness is recounting the moments a man was shot dead on Cleveland Avenue on Monday afternoon.

It's the second homicide in the neighborhood near Cleveland Avenue Elementary School in less than a week, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

The victim in this shooting has not been identified, but police said he was shot multiple times and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died.  At the scene, a witness who's asked not to be identified said he heard over 7 shots.

"There were about 10 to 12 shots," he said, adding later, "walked over there, seeing the guy laying there got shot eight times."

He was found lying in the grass off the road in front of the Cleveland Avenue Library; police closed the road for several hours investigating the incident.

Other witnesses said they saw the gunman running down Cleveland Avenue toward Marcon Drive, but even after APD brought their K9 Officers to track the suspect, they still haven't been found.

A witness, Malique McMahon, said he was actually on his way to a 'Mothers against Gang Violence' meeting at the rec center along Cleveland Avenue when he heard the shots.

"You could just tell by the rapid fire and the amount of ammunition used that it had to be fatal," McMahon said.

He said it was ironic he had to walk through a crime scene in his neighborhood to get to a Mothers Against Gang Violence meeting less than a mile away.

"It’s something I’ve been seeing often lately," he said.

Less than a week before Monday's deadly shooting, a 16-year-old was gunned down less than a mile away.

On May 1, APD said Rodney Thompson was shot and killed inside a home in the 100 block of Judy Lane SW. This is less than a quarter of a mile away from Cleveland Avenue Elementary School.
