DECATUR, Ga. — According to the DeKalb County District Attorney's office, a 21-year-old man was convicted last week in the brutal stabbing death of a Decatur man in June 2018.
The D.A.'s office said Jared Kelvin Smith, along with two others had targeted 49-year-old Ronald Roach after a gathering at his apartment.
According to a release from the district attorney's office, a friend discovered Roach's body inside his Flat Shoals Road apartment on the morning of June 28, 2018.
Roach had been stabbed 38 times across his chest, neck and back. In addition, he suffered blunt force injuries to his head.
Investigators were able to determine that Smith, along with indicted co-defendants Riki Albury and Kessiah Rowe had targeted Roach.
According to the release, the three later returned and demanded money from Roach.
After an argument, Roach was chased into his bedroom, where he was stabbed and beaten. The three attackers took Roach's phone, wallet and keys and left Roach's home in his car.
The release said Smith drove Roach's car for weeks following his murder.
The D.A.'s office said that after the three were arrested, Smith and Albury blamed each other for the attack.
Smith is scheduled for sentencing on October 4, 2019, before Senior Judge Daniel M. Coursey, who also presided over the trial.
Trial is pending against Albury and Rowe in connection with the case.
