DECATUR, Ga. — DeKalb County Police announced Monday that they've made an arrest in Sunday's deadly shooting.
Antione Lewis, 41, was shot and killed at the Circle K/Texaco on Candler Road. Authorities said a man and a woman are also in the hospital recovering from their gunshot wounds.
Lewis' loved ones left a memorial at the entrance of the gas station.
The neighborhood is now concerned about safety in that area.
Resident Virginia Ward lives right off the road.
"Every time you ride down Candler Road, it's something happening," Ward said.
Ward said gas stations, specifically, seem to be a hot spot.
"It's stuff happening inside the gas stations, outside the gas stations," Ward said. "People hanging out. It's so much."
DeKalb Police Lt. Shane Smith was at the scene after Sunday's shooting. When asked if this area often sees these types of crimes, here's what he said.
"No more than any other area," Smith said.
Ward sees it differently.
"It's like every other day, somebody's getting shot and killed," Ward said.
Here's a timeline of the shootings 11Alive has covered since December 2022 on Candler Road.
- December 2022 - A 43-year-old man was chased and killed near the Hidden Valley Apartments.
- February 2023 - Brian Dykes, 41, was shot and killed near Dunkin Donuts.
- February 2023 - James Dean was shot and killed at a bus stop.
- April 2023 - A 30-year-old man was killed at a car wash.
- September 2023 - Kenneth Campbell was shot and killed near JJ's Fish.
- November 2023 - Antione Lewis, 41, was shot and killed, and two others were shot.
On Monday, DCPD released the following statement:
The DeKalb County Police Department actively patrols the Candler Road area and will continue to do so to ensure the safety of the community. Compliance on the surveillance camera ordinance is handled by Code Enforcement not DKPD.
In Dean's case, DeKalb County Police said there have been no arrests.
In half of the cases, there have been no arrests. Three of the accused killers identified are men, and two are under 21. Javonte Forts was arrested in the killing of Campbell.
In October, DeKalb County passed a gas station security camera ordinance. Ward said she believes more cameras and police presence will help.
"If you get cameras or some kind of light at the bus stop at night," Ward said. "Maybe it'll help; a panic button— something."
Ward said if violence continues like this, she fears what could happen next.
"That's all you can do, try to stay safe," Ward said.
Ward said her daughter is still grieving and struggles to drive by Candler Road.
"I hope somebody catches whoever did (this) because whoever killed him (is) probably out doing someone else like that," Ward added.
