SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — After learning about an alleged sexual assault by a detention officer on an inmate who was with her son, a mother said investigators failed several families when they did not investigate one of their own.
Quentin Morgan, 22, a former deputy at the Spalding County Jail, is behind bars after his arrest on May 29. An inmate said Morgan came into his cell and sexually assaulted him.
11Alive learned about another incident involving Morgan with an inmate just weeks earlier.
"My son said, 'Please don't hit me anymore! Please don't hit me!' He was begging him," Brenda Dieckmann said.
Her 59-year-old son was scared for his life while her son was allegedly assaulted by former deputy Morgan. John Allen Wright had only been in the jail for two months before this happened.
"He said this officer came in while he was eating breakfast. He was sitting at a table with six other guys, and he said all of a sudden, that officer grabbed him from the back and slung him against a cabinet (and hit him) in his forehead. Then he takes him, drags him by his feet and carries him to his room and then kicks in three times in the ribs," Dieckmann said.
Brenda said when she reached out so an investigation into the incident could be done, no action was taken. Weeks later, Morgan was fired and arrested for the sexual assault of another inmate.
"It really upset me and to think that if they had done something, this would have never happened to this boy," Dieckmann said.
11Alive spoke to that inmate's mother right after Morgan's arrest. She was extremely hurt and disappointed to hear the news.
"When you are talking about this is an officer of the law, that makes it 100 times worse because it's a police officer you are supposed to trust," Judy Freeman said.
We reached out to the Spalding County Sheriff's Office about the assault allegations. None were denied. In a statement, deputies said the investigation is still active, and they couldn't provide any additional details.
"It don't take no month to get it done. No, it does not," Dieckmann said.
As time passes, Brenda's frustrations continue to grow. She said Morgan is "sick."
"We do not know how many more people he has done this to. He never should be able to put his actually put his feet back on pavement here," Dieckmann said.
