Shooting at South Cobb High School prompts continued calls for better safety procedures

The shooting happened during a youth football league game held at the school with one victim expected to be fine

AUSTELL, Ga. — Cobb County Police say they have arrested a juvenile in connection with a shooting last night during a youth football league game.

The suspect is now facing charges.

"We had a scare like that a few weeks ago at a different football game, so it was just shocking to see it so close with the other high school shooting already," said resident and South Cobb alum Keyona.

She found out about the shooting at South Cobb High School this morning when she read several Facebook posts about it.

The Georgia Middle School Athletic Association set the match between Walton Blue and South Cobb eighth graders.

Meanwhile, Cobb Schools Board Member Leroy Tre Hutchins said his phone has been ringing nonstop since the shooting.

"I do believe that there are some layered supports that are necessary to ensure that we can enjoy our children and also that our children can enjoy being in a safe environment," he added.

Hutchins has been pushing for more security at schools since last summer. He thinks bringing in more employees is one way to curb violence.

"School safety officers. These are not people who are carrying a gun, but they'd be a first line of defense, a first responder in the event of an emergency," said Hutchins.

However, he mentioned he's not clear if the district is responsible for providing security during community events held on school property, something Keyona said is necessary to protect kids.

"Safety is the number one priority for the kids to go home and go to school and come back home. That's the key here, to get them to go back home," she added.

Cobb Police noted that the victim in last night's shooting is expected to be fine.
