DeKalb County Fire said crews responded to the school, where they found a 15-year-old student in cardiac arrest.

"The incident occurred as many students were testing. After the medical emergency, the school was put on lockdown to limit movement within the building," Principal Tom Bass wrote in a letter to families on Monday. "We will not disclose additional information about the circumstances surrounding this student's passing out of respect for the family's privacy."

Bass said starting Tuesday morning, students would be able to meet with the school district's crisis team members for grief counseling.

"Everyone reacts to death differently. Our priority is respecting each other's feelings and emotions. As a family, we encourage you to talk with your child about this incident to help them share their thoughts and reactions," Bass added in the letter.

For those who need additional assistance from the school's administrative or counseling team, call (678) 874-8502.

"Our deepest sympathies remain with the student's loved ones during this challenging period," Bass said.

The school district said DCSD investigators are still investigating the matter.
