Mom describes 11-year-old killed in Paulding County shooting as 'the best kid to have'

Zander Whatley's mother shared more about the moment she saw her son lying lifeless.

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies are still looking for two murder suspects after an 11-year-old was shot and killed in Paulding County inside of his own home.

Zander Whatley was shot on April 29 around 11p.m. The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) said Whatley was pronounced dead at the hospital.

His mother, Shareeda Alexander, is heartbroken about the loss. She recalled what happened that night.

“My 14-year-old was crawling on my floor, calling 911, and I overheard him saying, ‘My brother's been shot.' So I was like, hold on. Wait, what?” Alexander said.  “And that's when they were like, ‘Zander's been hit.’ So I jumped up and got out of my bed and ran in there to his room, and I saw him just laying there lifeless.”

Bullet holes still mark the side of the Paulding County home more than two weeks after the shooting, as Alexander said the family is still trying to heal.

“We know that he's here in the spirit,” said Alexander while talking about Zander. “He's with us. And I believe all of this he's making happen. He's moving mountains.”

The sheriff's office announced Tuesday that one suspect, 18-year-old Osman Sesay, Jr., was arrested on May 11 in Charlotte, North Carolina, following a traffic stop and charged with murder.

“It was a little peace. It wasn't complete, but it was a little peace,” said Alexander. “And the only reason it was a little is because I know there are two still out there.”

The sheriff's office said it’s still looking for two other suspects, 19-year-old Nazier Lloyd Anderson and 19-year-old Al-Hamid Ibrahim Kuyateh. It said both are facing murder charges and are considered armed and dangerous.

“Justice,” Alexander said simply when answering what she wanted moving forward.

“I want my baby, and I want my family to be able to rest the way we deserve to rest," she said. "But I want them put away, and I wish they would just come forward.”

While she waits for more arrests to happen, Alexander remembers the love everyone felt for her son.

“He was the best kid to have. Everyone loved him,” she said. “And it very clearly shows that everyone loves Zander.”
