ATLANTA — A 22-year-old is now in custody after a man was killed in a shooting reported at the Georgia State MARTA station Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
Authorities said they found the victim around 1:20 p.m. MARTA Police said the man was sitting on the bench in front of the station when he was shot. Authorities then found the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Paul Mitchell, close to the station after the shooting unfolded.
Law enforcement are still investigating what led up to the shooting or if there is any connection between the shooter and the victim.
The 11Alive SkyTracker flew over the scene where yellow police tape, officers and several MARTA Police squad cars can be seen gathered.
The shooting at the station happened just blocks away from the Georgia state capitol, Georgia State University and Grady Hospital -- a busy part of Downtown.
It's also not far from the shooting scene from over the weekend where four people were shot, including two Georgia State students. That shooting happened near the RaceTrac off Piedmont Avenue near John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, which is close to the campus and has been connected to multiple other shootings, including a fatal shooting last December of a GSU student.
At this time, there's no indication that any of the shootings or scenes are connected. But students 11Alive spoke with on Sunday expressed concern about the incidents, their proximity to campus and their overall sense of safety on campus.
MARTA Police said that they do not believe Tuesday's shooting victim is a student at the university.
Mitchell is being charged with murder and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony. The suspect was also permanently banned from MARTA.
