GWINNETT, Ga. — Around 4,000 books filled a colorful Gwinnett County Public Schools bus parked in the back of an apartment complex outside of Lawrenceville.
"It is professionally my favorite part of my job," Jan Wilson Coordinator of Media Instruction said.
For three years Gwinnett County Public Schools Bookmobile has been touring around during the summertime in neighborhoods that sometimes aren't close local libraries.
"We determine where are the stops that have the most deserving students," Wilson said.
The goal of the bookmobile is to increase students' literacy levels.
Gwinnett County Schools determines where the bookmobile will stop each summer by looking at data collected by the United Way. They also look at the areas who frequent the bus and the number of students on free and reduce lunch programs.
Officials said each year the demand has grown. The district now has two bookmobiles driving around the community, arming students with snacks and literature.
"People are asking us, 'hey, you stop a mile from our apartment complex is there a way you can add us to the route,'" Wilson said.
Last summer, there were 70 stops, and students checked out over 13,000 books. Typically, the books would sit at the school all summer long.
"Students only need to read four books during the summer to stay on level. So what happens is reading during the summer helps them retain what they've learned the previous year of school and then it gets their brain ready for new knowledge," Wilson said.
Every week students have the opportunity to check out two books. This year, there are 100 stops the bookmobile will be making until July 22nd.
