ATLANTA — The Atlanta Police Department says an officer working in the headquarters building has tested positive for coronavirus.
This is the first confirmed case within the department.
According to Carlos Campos with the Atlanta Police Department, the officer has not been to work since March 11.
Campos said that on Friday, given the development, the police department has made a thorough cleaning of the area where the officer worked at Police Headquarters.
Commanders have spoken to the colleagues of the officer who tested positive so they are aware of the issue, Campos said.
It is important, he said, that the public is aware that Atlanta Police has a contingency plan in place, knowing that at some point, it was likely that the virus would affect its personnel.
According to Campos, the plan anticipates that a certain number of police department personnel would become affected by the virus -- either by becoming ill or through quarantine.
The department's plan places a priority on redirecting additional personnel to answer 911 calls as needed, he said.
He said there is no degradation to the department's ability to respond to emergencies.
