Georgia prisoner dies from coronavirus complications
A Georgia inmate has died from complications tied to COVID-19, the state's Department of Corrections confirmed on Saturday.
In a statement, the Georgia Department of Corrections said that the offender, who had been housed at Lee State Prison, had underlying medical conditions and had been hospitalized in Albany since March 18. He was pronounced dead at 9:55 p.m. on Friday.
The Georgia Department of Corrections first reported on possible cases at the facility on March 20.
A page provided by the state agency reports 24 staff and 15 prisoners have tested positive for coronavirus across its state prison system since the pandemic was first declared.
Lee State Prison, which is a short distance from the hard-hit Dougherty County area of Georgia, makes up a majority of the confirmed cases in the system with nine staff members and seven offenders.
Currently, it lists one death of a Lee State Prison inmate as the only one in the state believed to be tied to COVID-19. However, the agency previously reported on March 30 that it had one death at that time, suggesting this is the second person in the system to die from the illness.
The site also lists four offenders having the virus at county or private facilities.
Cobb Schools to students: Accept March grade as final or use digital score to improve
Cobb County School Superintendent Chris Ragsdale said in a note to parents Friday that while the system's buildings would not be open for the rest of the year, the education process has not stopped.
“We continue to make decisions based first on student and staff safety and in consultation with the Georgia Department of Health and the Governor’s office," Ragsdale said.
No students' grades at the conclusion of the school year will be any lower than it was on Friday, March 13. Students will be given a choice to accept their grades as of that date, or continue to earn grades for the remainder of the school year in order to improve their grades. Work submitted after March 13 would be used to improve students' grades.
Grades for students in grades K-8 would be reported as pass/fail. High school courses would be reported as standard grades for GPA calculation purposes. Any student who was on track to graduate as of Friday, March 13, 2020, will receive credit for all courses for which they were enrolled in on or before that date.
The school system says they are actively evaluating all options in relation to graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2020. Once decisions have been finalized, they will be communicated as soon as possible.
Coronavirus cases rise to 6,647; Total deaths in Georgia up to 211
The Georgia Department of Public Health says there are 6,647 total cases of COVID-19 as of noon on Sunday. The new data indicates that 19.3 percent of those individuals -- or 1,283 of them, have been hospitalized. State officials said there have been 211 deaths.
Fulton County still sees the largest number of cases of coronavirus with 962. 27 of the deaths occurred in that county. Dougherty County, however, remains the location with the largest death toll from COVID-19 infection in Georgia. Thirty people have passed away there. That county has 686 cases reported.
DeKalb County has 543 cases, Cobb County has 456, Gwinnett with 408, Clayton with 238, Henry at 167, Bartow with 160, Carroll with 158 and Lee County with 136 cases, round out the top ten counties in terms of number of cases in Georgia, according to the DPH.

Easter Sunrise services at Stone Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain canceled
Two metro Atlanta mainstays of the Easter season -- the Sunday morning service at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park and the Easter Sunrise Service at the top of Stone Mountain -- have been cancelled.
The Kiwanis and Rotary clubs of Marietta, who jointly sponsor the Kennesaw Mountain service said they are calling off this year's event due to concerns over the spread of coronavirus.
The annual Easter Sunrise Service at the top of Stone Mountain has also been called off.
"Due to the quickly evolving global crisis caused by COVID-19, and for the health and well-being of our employees and guests, Stone Mountain Park attractions remain temporarily closed. The natural areas and hiking trails remain open," the park said in a statement.
