Rockdale County sheriff tests positive for COVID-19 while in precautionary quarantine
A sheriff who, just days earlier, announced he had placed himself under a voluntary self-quarantine has tested positive for COVID-19.
Rockdale County Sheriff Eric J. Levett released a statement on April 1 announcing publicly that he had gone into a 14-day quarantine per his doctor's advice after not feeling well on March 27. At that time, he also announced that he was being tested for coronavirus.
The test came back positive.
"Although this was not the news that I was expecting, it just further let me know how seriously we all need to take the epidemic and abide by the orders that have been put in place," he said in a statement released by the sheriff's office.
The sheriff said that he has continued working from home during the quarantine and thanked the public for their well-wishes.
In his previous message, the sheriff said that he had notified all of his command staff through texts of his illness - at the time not confirmed to be COVID-19. He also notified locals through email.
Delta confirms some employees test positive for COVID-19
According to the Delta Air Line Pilots Union's website, as of Saturday afternoon, at least 48 pilots were reported to have tested positive for COVID-19.
In a statement to 11Alive News on Saturday, the Atlanta-based air carrier said that while they could confirm that they have had some positive tests among some employees, they would not confirm specific numbers.
"If a Delta crew member is confirmed to have COVID-19, Delta works with the CDC to determine next steps, including notifying employees and customers who might have been in close contact with that crew member," said Delta spokesman Anthony Black.
The carrier has about 14,000 pilots and 90,000 employees. They reported earlier this week that a ground handler in Detroit died of complications related to COVID-19.
Company with metro Atlanta ties given go-ahead to expedite PPE manufacturing
The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Saturday that it will not challenge a collaborative effort between several companies to "expedite and increase manufacturing, sourcing and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) along with coronavirus treatment-related medication.
Among those companies is McKesson, a Texas-based company with officers across metro Atlanta.
The effort, which also includes, Owens & Minor, Inc., Cardinal Health, Inc. Medline Industries Inc. and Henry Schein, Inc., is part of an emergency response developed and led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Hospitals across metro Atlanta are pleading for help bolstering supplies of PPE as patient surges hit their doors - with some saying supplies are dwindling or gone.
