Emory develops diagnostic antibody blood test
Emory University has developed a "sensitive and specific" diagnostic antibody blood test that will help determine antibody responses in people who have been infected by COVID-19, they said on Monday.
Initially, testing will be available only to Emory Healthcare inpatients, certain groups of outpatients, health care providers and staff members, but will then be expanded significantly.
Emory hopes to reach a goal of 5,000 tests per day by mid-June.
“The test will indicate whether somebody has developed antibodies to the COVID-19 virus,” says John Roback, MD, PhD, executive vice-chair for clinical operations in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and medical director of Emory Medical Laboratories.
Roback emphasizes that the presence of antibodies is no guarantee of immunity.
