ATLANTA — They are the heroes amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals. But also the grocery clerks, truck drivers, and sanitation workers.
And one Gainesville woman is especially thankful for a few garbage truck drivers, who went the extra mile.
Joan Sheffield says she was cooking dinner for her husband last week, when she stuck her wedding rings in her pocket for safe keeping. The rings accidentally made it in the trash.
In a panic, Joan called the city's solid waste department, desperate to search for the rings she's worn for 34 years. The waste crew stopped their route and met her at the landfill.
"The drivers came up, and they were so nice and so thoughtful, and they said they were so sorry," Sheffield recalled. "I sifted through most of the earlier bags and it caught my eye, this green twist tie, and sure enough there were four to five smaller bags in there and the third one was the charm - I found it!"
Joan says she's so thankful for the waste crew's help and has promised to take them to lunch, once the shelter in place order is lifted.
