WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ga. — A 4-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl from Washington County are dead in the wake of Tropical Storm Helene, according to Sheriff Joel Cochran.
Cochran said that the two children died when a tree in the backyard fell into a bedroom.
These two deaths were a part of the six confirmed deaths in Central Georgia and the fourth "tree down" causality.
Laurens County Coroner Nathan Stanley said a 58-year-old man died when a tree fell inside his home. Stanley said that, hours earlier, a 48-year-old woman from Kentucky died after a tree fell on top of a tractor trailer truck carrying her and her husband. They initially stopped when a tree fell in front of them on Highway 441 South, when a second tree hit the truck. The husband sustained minor injuries.
Wheeler County Coroner Ted Mercer said two people died after a suspected tornado flipped a mobile home.
Wheeler County EMA director Steve Adams says the two people were found in a field on Adams Cemetery Road, about 100 yards from where their mobile home was.
Helene, which was downgraded to a tropical storm as it traveled through Central Georgia, caused widespread damage across the region with trees and power lines down in several counties.
This is a developing story. 13WMAZ will provide additional updates when they are made available.
