Woodland Heights apartment complex working to fix what residents say are 'unlivable conditions'

Residents say they see progress being made after months of living with rat infestations, raw sewage and mold for months

ATLANTA — People living at the Woodland Heights apartment complex in Atlanta are upset over what they call “unlivable conditions.”

Rat infestation, mold, and raw sewage are just some complaints that have triggered housing code violations. On Wednesday, the complex's owners were in court for a civil violations hearing.

The City of Atlanta and the owners of Woodland Heights agreed to draw up a consent agreement with the goal of fixing the issues that led to more than 100 housing code violation citations.

“We need a reset until September 11. We believe, he said he would have authority from his client as to whether or not we can enter the consent agreement,” said City Attorney Janel Bowles.

Lawyers representing the city, Woodland Heights and Rolling Bends Apartments met inside Judge Christopher Portis’ courtroom Wednesday for a hearing. The complex had well over 100 housing code violations,  but has been working to fix the issues.

“They are making progress towards full compliance at the property,” said a city inspector.

Portis agreed to let both parties hash out the terms of a consent agreement to get into full compliance at the property and submit that agreement to him in two weeks.

“So we have exchanged forms of the consent order, and we’ll be in the middle of agreeing with the redline,” Bowles.

Portis wants to set what he called some benchmark dates for the consent agreement. That agreement is due in two weeks.
