Family raises money for funeral of 46-year-old man killed in Downtown Alpharetta

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The family of a 46-year-old man who was gunned down after a verbal argument in Downtown Alpharetta is raising funds for his funeral.

Justin Mourning was killed on the night of Sept. 11. Jaden Lewis, 21, was arrested and charged with murder in connection to Mourning's death, according to police. 

"Justin Mourning was a beloved husband, father, colleague and friend to many," an online fundraiser read.

The fundraiser added that he was originally from Denver, Colorado, and relocated to Alpharetta in 2015 for a job he had worked for 19 years.

Family representatives added that he is survived by his wife of 17 years, Tiffany Mourning, and leaves behind two children, both of whom are in college.

It added that Mourning was a "lifelong" Denver Broncos fan and loved participating in Cornhole ATL and walking the Big Creek Greenway with his wife.

"As the family navigates this difficult time, they kindly request privacy while the police continue their investigation," the fundraiser added.

According to an online obituary, Mourning's funeral will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. at NorthPoint Community Church.

More about the case

The incident occurred just after 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Officers responded to the area of Highway 9 and Milton Avenue, which is surrounded by shops and restaurants. The intersection is also close to Alpharetta City Hall and down the road from the police station.

According to the department, the shooting happened after a "verbal argument between two people." It was not known if the two people knew each other.

"This is a very rare incident for the downtown area of Alpharetta. And to be honest with you, Alpharetta as a whole, there is not much crime in the city of Alpharetta, and we see an especially low amount of violent crime," Alpharetta Police Captain Andrew Splawn said. 

Lewis was arrested and charged with murder less than 24 hours after the incident.

A witness, who did not want to be identified, shared video with 11Alive of the moments before the gunshots were fired, which appears to show Mourning.
