Family of man stabbed to death at MARTA Five Points station seeks justice in his murder

Marcus Harris was kind of loving and "stayed to himself," which is why family can't understand what led to his fatal stabbing inside the station.

ATLANTA — The Harris family is a tight-knit group.

But now, there is a void after Marcus Harris, who they called “little deacon,” was killed at the Five Points MARTA station around 8 a.m. on the northbound platform.

“Marcus was an angel. He loved everybody. He never fought. He never raised his voice. He was always there for you," said Maria Harris, Marcus' mom.

Harris’ family said he was a devoted father of two as well as a loving son, cousin and brother. It’s hard for them to understand why his life was brutally taken on Monday.

That same day, authorities arrested 46-year-old Jason Harris and charged him with murder and aggravated assault. He was booked into the Fulton County Jail.

The case has community members like Derrick Townsend feeling unsettled.

“The most heartbreaking thing for me was seeing his daughter on the news and not having those answers," said community activist and founder of Hopeful Change, Derrick Townsend.

Harris’ cousin,  Shanta Benjamin, said although her family hasn’t been able to find out much about what led up to Marcus’ fatal stabbing, they are hoping to see security camera footage.

“We are hearing different stories, so right now, we really don’t know until we go to court and see the video footage that we haven’t been able to see," Benjamin said.

Townsend said this senseless act impacts everyone.

“When you look at the violence, there’s an after-effect," Townsend said.

The family is raising money to bury Harris. Here is a link to the online fundraiser.
