ATLANTA — Atlanta firefighters put out flames at a homeless encampment at a bridge underpass in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood Monday morning, according to officials.
Authorities said crews found a trash fire under the bridge at John Wesley Dobb Avenue at the Interstate 75/Interstate 85 northbound ramp.
It took 500 gallons of water to extinguish the flames, according to Atlanta Fire Rescue officials.
11Alive SkyTracker flew over the scene, where two firetrucks were seen responding to the area with yellow caution tape surrounding the underpass.
As temperatures dipped into the 30s early Monday morning, many were looking to stay warm in the frigid cold. Metro Atlanta has seen numerous fires happen at encampments over the years.
Monday's incident comes after a fire got out of control at a homeless encampment on Cheshire Bridge Road back in December, closing the roads indefinitely for months. In the latest Cheshire Bridge Road incident, business owners and residents had growing concerns as some unhoused groups have created make-shift shelters to stay warm in the cold.
Although miles away, concerns are felt heavily throughout the city.
Back in January, another fire broke out at a homeless encampment along Buford Highway near a daycare.
As for the fire along John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, no other details were released by officials at this time.
