'Like an airplane crashed down' | Gwinnett resident describes FedEx truck slamming through home

The man described the moment as the last thing he could have ever expected -- when he got out of the shower and found a huge hole in his house.

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. — A homeowner in Gwinnett County is shocked as he is still trying to wrap his head around what happened at his home on Tuesday afternoon.

That's when a FedEx truck veered off the road in his neighborhood on Tattersall Terrace NE in Sugar Hill in northern Gwinnett.

The delivery truck jumped a curb, ran over a mailbox, and barely missed an electrical box before careening into the front of a two-story home.

Yong Cho said he was upstairs taking a shower when suddenly, he heard the strangest sound.

“Like an airplane crashed down or something like that,” Cho said.

He described it as an "explosion."

Cho said he raced downstairs to check on his wife and their cat -- but what he found was the last thing he could have ever expected. That’s when he found a huge hole in the front of his house.

The front of a FedEx truck was sitting in his living room.

“What is this?” he recalled asking himself.

Cho said once he made sure everyone was safe inside, he went outside to check on the driver.

As he opened his front door and looked into the driver side of the truck, he noticed the driver was not in the truck.

Cho said that after a few seconds, he realized the driver was out on the road.

He rushed to the driver, whom he described as a younger gentleman, and kept saying, “Wake up, wake up, can you hear me?” But Cho said the man was not responding.

Cho said he called 911, and within minutes, Gwinnett County Fire and EMS were on the scene.

Gwinnett County Fire said their Technical Rescue Team (TRT) assessed the damage to the home and determined that the vehicle had compromised its structural integrity.

Before the TRT left the scene, they applied shoring to reinforce the structure until building specialists could address the damage.

A heavy-duty wrecker was requested and used to remove the FedEx truck from the home.

The driver was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.

It’s still unclear if the driver had a medical episode before the crash. Cho also questioned if the driver fell out before the truck hit his house or if the man got out after the crash and collapsed in the roadway.
