HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — Editor's Note: The above video is from previous coverage of this incident.
A Hampton Police Officer who was hit by a vehicle near Atlanta Motor Speedway earlier this week is slowly improving as he has a long recovery ahead of him, according to authorities.
The department added that although 39-year-old Duane Jones is still in the critical care unit at Grady Hospital, he will not need any surgeries.
"Please keep him in your prayers," the department said in its last update.
The incident happened around 10:40 p.m. on Highway 3 near Woolsey Road in Hampton on Monday night.
Police said that Officer Jones was hit while working outside his vehicle at a GDOT paving project near the Atlanta Motor Speedway when he was struck by a vehicle.
During a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Hampton Police Chief Bo Jones said Jones sustained multiple serious injuries, including a fractured hip, several broken ribs, fractures in his spine and bruised lungs.
Authorities said on Thursday evening that doctors' main focus is to get Officer Jones' lung functions to improve.
No charges are expected, police said. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident.
