What we know after 3-year-old shot and killed by gunfire from outside his home in Athens

The toddler died tragically on Friday night in the incident, with his family now planning a balloon release memorial this week.

ATHENS, Ga. — A family is devastated and a community is still reeling after a 3-year-old was killed on Friday night in Athens when an outburst of gunfire happened outside his home.

The boy, Kyron Zarco, was killed when he was hit by bullets that flew into the home during the shooting. A teenager was later arrested and charged with murder.

  • It happened at the Hallmark Mobile Home Park: Police responded to the scene of the gunfire, on Spring Valley Road, about 5:30 p.m. on Friday evening.
  • A fundraiser for the family is happening: It had raised more than $20,000 of a $25,000 goal as of Monday morning. The link to the GoFundMe is available here.
  • A balloon release for Kyron is scheduled for this week: The gathering in his honor will take place on Wednesday. It's happening at 5:30 p.m. at Heard Park (formerly East Athens Community Center Park) at 400 McKinley Dr. Anyone going is asked to wear baby blue and bring baby blue balloons.
  • Two others were shot: In addition to 3-year-old Kyron, his 9-year-old brother and an adult were hit by the gunfire. Those two were treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.
  • Kyron's mom said they were watching a movie: The boy was on the couch when bullets came in through the window. "My baby didn't even have a chance," Shanita Smith said, later adding, "Why? Why? I don't bother nobody. I don't bother nobody. So, were you aiming for someone else's house? Because why? My sweet little baby."
  • A 17-year-old was arrested: Julian Omar Cubillos, of Lawrenceville, has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault and violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.

  • Warrants are out for another 16-year-old and 18-year-old: Police have not yet announced an arrest for two other suspects, 16-year-old Jayden Brown and 18-year-old Dakious Echols. Both those additional suspects face the same charges as Cubillos.
  • A $2,000 reward is available for information leading to the arrest of the other two suspects: Anyone with information is asked to call 706-705-4775.
