MARIETTA, Ga. — Cobb County Police has a warrant out for the arrest of a man the department said caused a deadly hit-and-run accident in July.
Police initially reported it was investigating a fatal crash on Hicks Road at the Fisher Drive intersection.
On Tuesday, police reported that Brandon Earl, a Tennessee driver of a GMC Sierra, reached for his cell phone, which distracted him. Police added that this happened when Earl's license was suspended.
Police said Earl faces multiple charges, which include second-degree vehicular homicide, failure to maintain lane, driver to exercise due care, and driving while license suspended/revoked. CCPD said, as of Tuesday, Earl was not in custody.
The deadly crash happened on July 16 just after 3:30 p.m. Police said while traveling southbound on Hicks Road, Earl crossed the center line. CCPD reported he collided with a GMC Yukon XL, flipping the SUV on its side.
Cobb Police said Earl continued driving in the wrong lane, hitting a Ford Escape and pushing it into a guardrail over a creek.
Earl then allegedly hit a Hyundai Sonata, hospitalizing the Sonata's driver.
Police reported the driver of the Escape, Debbie Bates, died on the scene. CCPD added the driver of the Yukon was not injured.
