Man shot at MARTA Five Points station after allegedly stabbing two people, charging at MARTA Police officer

Here's what we know.

ATLANTA — Authorities are investigating after a MARTA Police officer was involved in a shooting outside the Five Points MARTA station on Peachtree Street Wednesday morning.

MARTA Police said it happened around 11 a.m. -- when the officer saw a man wielding a knife and stabbing two people. That's when authorities said the man then charged at the officer -- stabbing him in the hand.

The officer fired his weapon twice, hitting the suspect in the leg and stomach, which stopped the attack, MARTA Police Deputy Willie Davenport said.

Authorities said the suspect and both stabbing victims are stable at this time. They were taken to Grady Hospital for medical treatment. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who was asked to investigate the incident, said the man and the two victims were in "critical condition."

GBI officials also said the officer had injuries to his head and hands. It is unclear if the head injury was from a stab wound.

Additionally, MARTA Police said the officer received stitches in his hand.

The suspect in the case was a 33-year-old man from Wisconsin, according to the GBI.

This comes after a deadly stabbing at the Five Points MARTA station earlier this month. MARTA Police said they plan on increasing security at the station because of the recent incidents.

"We will have increased patrol with uniform officers, detective specialists, as well as our special operation unit K-9s, under covered teams, to assist patrol," Davenport said. "We have a joint bike detail with APD's Zone 5, who patrol the downtown area."
