Victims' families in Mechanicsville shooting that injured 5 beg police for answers

A news conference was held outside Grady Hospital at 2 p.m.

ATLANTA — Families of the victims in last weekend's shooting in Mechanicsville spoke on Friday.

The shooting happened Saturday, a few hours after a peaceful community event by Windsor Street Plaza ended. Five people, including teenagers, were injured in the incident.

A news conference was held outside Grady Hospital at 2 p.m.

During the conference, attorneys and parents of the victims came together to express their disappointment in the fact there have been no suspects apprehended. Parents begged police for answers in the shooting of their loved ones.

The families planned to come together to share more about the conditions of the victims injured in the shooting, as well as collectively call for more action and the prosecution of those responsible.

Their ages ranged from 15-29 years old. The oldest victim, a 29-year-old woman, was initially in critical condition.

The shooting occurred during the annual "Mechanicsville Day" community celebration. Mechanicsville Civic Association president Dr. David Holder described it this week to 11Alive's Tresia Bowles as a reunion where Mechanicsville residents, past and present, can come together to celebrate.

Holder said, these days, "Mechanicsville Day," is more like a block party that creeps later into the night than it should. He believes the celebration should end by 5 p.m.

"There's always some kind of stream to the 'Mechanicsville Day' and people wanting to come by and do drive-by shootings," Holder said.

Last year, on Sep. 9, three people were shot near the intersection of Windsor Street and Richardson Street. It was described by the community as "Mechanicsville Day" as well.
