LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — A day meant to honor lives lost in the armed forces will also serve as a day to remember a life lost protecting his own community outside of Atlanta.
Gwinnett County will pay tribute to Gwinnett County Police Officer Antwan Toney during its 16th annual Memorial Day ceremony on May 27 at 1 p.m. The tribute will happen at the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial in Lawrenceville.
The county said Toney was just days away from celebrating his third anniversary with the department when he was gunned down outside of Snellville on Oct. 20, 2018.
Following his death, many in law enforcement - and in the community - honored his sacrifice with kind words and actions. On Memorial Day, that will continue with a keynote address from retired Army Col. Steve Pitt, commandant of cadets for Georgia Military College in Milledgeville. Also speaking will be District 1 Commissioner Jace Brooks and County Administrator Glenn Stephens. Public safety honor guards will also participate in the ceremony.
For those in Gwinnett who can't attend, the ceremony will also be on TV Gwinnett.
The Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial is located on the grounds of the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration Center at 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville. In addition to the tribute to Officer Toney, the memorial itself honors all Gwinnett residents who died in the line of duty in military or public service.
