Free meals for Atlanta community, supporting Dat Fire Jerk Chicken's recovery

The chain will soon set up shop around Atlanta and wanted to support its soon-to-be neighbor restaurant, Dat Fire Jerk Chicken

ATLANTA — In solidarity with a local Jamaican restaurant that caught fire in April, world-famous South African restaurant brand Nando's is offering to pay for meals next Tuesday.

The restaurant chain has previously announced that it would be opening two locations in Atlanta and wanted to support its soon-to-be neighbor restaurant, Dat Fire Jerk Chicken.

"Considering they are a fellow restaurant known for their incredible flame-grilled grub, they were heartbroken to hear that Atlanta's popular Jamaican eatery Dat Fire Jerk Chicken caught fire on April 20," the company said in part.

It has pledged to cover 404 meals from Dat Fire's operating food truck on Tuesday, May 7, in support of the #DatFireWillRiseAgain fundraising campaign to restore its flagship restaurant.

Meals to the public will be available on the Nando's tab from noon to 4 p.m. at the Dat Fire food truck located at 226 Northside Drive in Castleberry Hill.

Any meals left over after 4 p.m., Nando's said would be donated to PAWKids - an Atlanta-based nonprofit and community hub that exists to support and provide food and holistic resources to children and families in need.

Dat Fire Jerk Chicken has received much community support following the fire in April with others including Jay Bailey, the President and CEO of H.J. Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs, stepping in to pay for the first 50 meals.

"Your love and support have not only fueled our grills but have ignited our spirits," Chef Jay John with Dat Fire Jerk Chicken previously said. "Thank you, Atlanta, for showing up massively and reminding us that we are more than a restaurant—we are a family, we are a community, and we will rise again, together."
