Gwinnett County residents express concerns after crashes persist on Langford Road

A county spokesperson previously told 11Alive that the guardrail will be installed in 2024.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Concerns persist among residents of Gwinnett County regarding the safety of Langford Road in Norcross as accidents continue to plague the area.

The recent crash over the weekend has reignited fears among locals, prompting questions about when promised safety measures will be implemented.

11Alive previously reported over the past decade, Langford Road has been the site of more than 300 car accidents, prompting calls for increased safety measures. In response to mounting concerns, Gwinnett County officials announced plans to install a guardrail along the troubled stretch of road. However, uncertainty looms over the timeline for this crucial safety enhancement.

Residents like Geoffrey Alvarez, who has witnessed multiple accidents near his home, express frustration over the lack of progress.

"Since I've been here, I think I've witnessed four incidents," Alvarez said. "Three of them have been on this side, and they've actually gone through that fence."

Alvarez's sentiment reflects the urgency felt by many in the community, who fear for their safety amid ongoing traffic hazards.

The most recent incident occurred on Mother's Day, when a car crashed through barricades near Alvarez's property, highlighting the potential dangers faced by residents.

Despite the installation of temporary barricades, concerns remain high, especially for pedestrians who frequent the area.

Dior Choi, Alvarez's neighbor, shared videos capturing the aftermath of the recent crash, emphasizing the importance of swift action to prevent further accidents.

"If those barricades hadn't been there, I feel like I could have been injured or even killed," Alvarez said.

While Gwinnett County officials assured residents of the guardrail's installation, the lack of a concrete timeline has left many anxious for answers.

"I thought that this was their solution because they haven't exactly been proactive with handling this whole thing," remarked one resident.

A spokesperson for Gwinnett County sent the following response to 11Alive:

The plan to install the guardrail in 2024 is still in place. We are currently working on finalizing the timeline, as we coordinate efforts with several utility companies and our contractor. As always, the safety of our residents remains our top priority.

As the community awaits updates from county officials, Alvarez and his neighbors advocate for a firm deadline to ensure their neighborhood's safety.
