DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Three DeKalb County Public School students were involved in a car accident that left one dead over the weekend.
According to a letter by Lakeside High School's principal, Susan Stoddard, the incident happened early Saturday morning on Feb. 24. One of the students died from injuries sustained during the accident, and the other two are in the hospital but expected to recover. The letter stated that the names of the students were being withheld to respect the families' privacy.
"Our deepest sympathies remain with the loved ones of the students affected during this challenging period," Stoddard wrote.
The DeKalb County Police Department said that officers responded to Oak Grove Rd. near Kirkland Dr. on Feb. 24 around midnight in reference to a single-vehicle accident. The police said that the driver and two passengers were taken to a hospital with various injuries, and one of the passengers later died.
The police department said that the victim who died was 18 years old and that the investigation is ongoing.
The principal wrote that faculty, staff and students were informed of the tragic news earlier on Monday. Stoddard added that the District Crisis Team Members, which includes psychologists and counselors, will remain onsite throughout the week to help support students during this time. Stoddard also said that they have provided the necessary resources and personnel to help staff with grief counseling.
"The Lakeside High School community is here to support and uplift in any way we can, and our priority is respecting each other's feelings and emotions," Stoddard wrote.
