DECATUR, Ga. — This year marks the 41st annual Can-a-Thon hosted by 11Alive, and the impact of your generous donations on our communities is more significant than ever. Thirteen of the Salvation Army's food programs serve countless individuals, including seniors, who all benefit immensely from the contributions received.
Miss Pat Beasley, a long-time resident at Decatur Christian Towers, shares her perspective on how these donations make a difference in the lives of those in need. Pat emphasizes the significance of these contributions, especially for individuals who may be on the brink or facing financial challenges.
"Now, some of us don't have to worry about anything, but for those of us who are sort of on the brink or on the precipice there... it makes a difference," Pat said.
Living at Decatur Christian Towers since July 2013, Pat has witnessed the impact of donations firsthand. She explains that these donations are a lifeline for residents like her, who sometimes have to choose between purchasing medication and buying food.
"I love canned vegetables, and we have rice with our meals and potatoes. So basically, it's a meat, a starch, and a vegetable that we have for dinner," Pat said, highlighting the variety and nutritional value these donations bring to their meals.
Angie Clawson, representing the Salvation Army, sheds light on the challenges faced by residents like Pat. With around 200 apartments at Decatur Christian Towers, Clawson emphasizes the importance of donations in providing a variety of foods to the residents.
"High protein foods are great—peanut butter, things that are shelf-stable, canned tuna, or packaged tuna," suggests Clawson, emphasizing the nutritional value of the donated items.
Despite the growing need, Clawson assures that the Salvation Army is ready to meet the demand. "Just knowing that we're able to help them and ease that burden and lift them up is so important to us," she said.
As the Can-a-Thon continues its mission, one can at a time, the community's collective effort becomes a powerful force in supporting those facing food insecurity. The impact of these donations extends beyond the pantry, providing comfort and nourishment to individuals and families in need.
