TYRONE, Ga. — Two students could possibly face criminal charges after one allegedly threatened to bring a gun to a metro Atlanta high school Wednesday, officials confirm.
In a letter sent home to parents, the principal of Sandy Creek High School in Fayette County made parents aware of the situation and that no gun was found.
According to the letter, the school was informed that the FBI found a student's Instagram post that stated, "Bringing a gun to school tomorrow. Leave before 4th period." Another student reposted the message.
The principal said authorities identified both students and that they are facing possible criminal charges and disciplinary actions.
"Protecting everyone’s safety is a top priority, and it takes all of us working together to ensure that Sandy Creek High is a safe place for learning and working," the letter reads. "Please remind your student(s) about the seriousness of making threatening statements. Also, please emphasize the importance of telling a trusted adult if they have any information that could threaten the safety of our school. "
The incident came on the same day of an apparent drive-by shooting at Benjamin E. Mays High School, where four students were shot -- marking the third shooting at a metro Atlanta high school in less than two weeks.
Mario Bailey, a 15-year-old, lost his life after a Tri-Cities High School basketball game on Feb. 9. Two people are facing charges for allegedly shooting two people on Feb 1. in the parking lot of McEachern High School.
According to the Washington Post, more than 1,150 guns were seized on K-12 campuses in the 2022-2023 school year.
