COBB COUNTY, Ga. — It was a horrific day at Sprayberry High School as school officials locked the building down when a fight led to a stabbing.
It’s a situation that has parents hugging their children tightly Wednesday afternoon. Parent Suzane Nesbitt said her child texted her about what happened.
"I freaked out. I ran to here and the school emailed me saying Code Red and they did a lockdown and everything,” Nesbitt said.
According to a letter from Sprayberry’s Principal, the school went into a Code Red lockdown just before noon.
Senior Turner Maddox was inside when news of the lockdown hit the P.A. system and he decided to get out of the building.
“I think there’s three things you can do in an emergency in a school situation. You can run, you can hide, you can fight. I had an option to run, so I ran,” said Maddox.
Cobb County Police said there was a fight where a student stabbed another student. Maddox said he heard the situation unfolded in a bathroom.
“There was three kids fighting in the bathroom and apparently one of them had a knife or some kind of object and stabbed the other student and then ran out to the Chick-Fil-A across there then took off somewhere,” he said.
Eventually, police took a suspect into custody and classes continued as normal but with a large police presence in the area.
Nesbitt has twin sons at the school and said she’s not sure if she’s bringing them back.
“I don’t feel like we’re safe anywhere. There’s a shooting everywhere. You send you kids to school and you don’t know if they’re coming back,” said Nesbitt.
11Alive cameras were rolling when police handcuffed one young man on campus and then EMS workers treated him there. It's unclear at this time if the person we saw detained was the stabbing suspect.
As for the victim, that student is being treated at a hospital.
