18-year-old to be charged with vehicular homicide, DUI and more in deadly crash involving Lakeside High student: police

Sophia Lekiachvili, 18, died in the February crash.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County Police issued warrants for an 18-year-old in connection to a crash that killed a Lakeside High School student in February.

Authorities said that over the weekend, warrants were obtained for Hannah Hackemeyer for first-degree vehicular homicide, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving and driving under the influence under 21. She is not currently in custody, but warrants were turned over to the DeKalb County Fugitive Unit, authorities said.

According to DKPD, officers responded to Oak Grove Rd, near Kirkland Dr., on Feb. 24 around midnight for a single-vehicle accident with three passengers. Information from an incident report obtained by 11Alive reveals that the car was traveling southbound when Hackemeyer allegedly lost control of it. The car then collided with the sidewalk, hit a crossing sign and then a tree. In the end, the vehicle went back into the roadway, overturned and came to a stop on its roof. The crash report also alleged that the incident was speed-related.

All three involved were hurt, and one of the passengers, 18-year-old Sophia Lekiachvili, died from her injuries.

Following this, Lakeside High School Principal Susan Stoddard released a letter addressing the accident and stated that all three involved were students at the school.

“Our deepest sympathies remain with the loved ones of the students affected during this challenging period,” Stoddard previously wrote in the letter.

There have been five Lakeside High students who died in a car accident this school year — with Lekiachivili being the fourth.

Back in September 2023, three students at Lakeside High School were tragically killed in a wreck on Labor Day weekend after a pickup truck went over a raised ramp and fell onto the interstate collective distributor on GA-316 westbound at I-85. Coral Lorenzo-Rosario, 17, and sisters Katie Gaitan Miranda and Ashley Gaitan, who were 17 and 16 years old, respectively, lost their lives.

The latest incident happened in March when 16-year-old Guillermo Aguas-Bahena died from a wreck that happened at the intersection of Northcrest Road and Chamblee-Tucker Road.
