Georgia Legislature honors UGA students who helped save 3 people in crash

ATLANTA — The University of Georgia students hailed as heroes for helping save three people following a crash were honored by the Georgia Legislature Tuesday.

The five women, who are all students at UGA, according to Burke County Sheriff's Office, witnessed a car veer off the road along Ellison Bridge Road. After seeing what happened, the sheriff's office said the students took action.

The students --  Jane McArdle, Mary McCollum, Eleanor Cart, Clarke Jones and Kaitlyn Iannace -- jumped into the water as the white SUV was partially submerged and pulled the driver and two children who were inside the vehicle to safety, the sheriff's office previously said.

They were given a round of applause by those in the room for the action they took.

After the single-vehicle crash occurred, the sheriff's office shared a photo earlier this month on social media showing the wrecked car in the water. Deputies said their quick thinking and bravery are admirable.
