Election Day underway in Georgia | Live updates

11Alive is tracking developments on Election Day on Tuesday.

ATLANTA — Election Day is officially upon us, and Georgia has already seen more than four million votes through the early voting period that ended last Friday.

Over 55% of Georgia's 7.2 million active voters have cast a ballot. An Election Day turnout of another roughly million votes would see the Peach State surpass the 2020 election overall turnout.

We will track developments throughout Election Day on Tuesday and the rest of this week as the residents of swing state Georgia cast their votes in the 2024 election.

11Alive will have live election coverage on 11Alive+, which is available on Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV.  Text "plus" to 404-885-7600 to download 11Alive+ and stream it now.

2024 Election in Georgia | Live updates, Tuesday, November 5

9:37 a.m. | Here's the full statement on that Feldwood Elementary situation from South Fulton Police:

This morning, Fulton County School Police received information indicating that several schools were allegedly going to receive bomb threats around 8:15 a.m. While no threats have been received at any elementary schools, officers were immediately dispatched to conduct precautionary sweeps of multiple campuses to ensure staff safety.

In collaboration, the City of South Fulton Police Department deployed additional response teams to assist in securing the campuses that raised concerns. At this time, we do not believe these threats are credible. However, given that many of these school locations are also polling sites, we recognize the potential for further attempts by bad actors to cause panic and disruption.

Feldwood Elementary School and poling locations have not been evacuated and was swept as a precaution. Nothing suspicious was found.

Our priority is to maintain a safe and orderly environment for both staff and voters. We will continue using our additional resources to ensure minimal disruption throughout the day. We encourage the public to remain calm and vigilant, and we appreciate the community’s cooperation as we work to safeguard our schools and community spaces.

9:25 a.m. | We've learned of a police presence at Feldwood Elementary, which is a polling place in south Fulton County today. Our reporter on scene says people are still going in and out of the building, and South Fulton Police have told us this was a situation where a message circulated to several area schools warning of a threat that would come in at 8:15 a.m. No specific threat was received, police say, but officers were sent around to locations as a precaution.

No evacuations took place.

9:10 a.m. | Update on the SOS news conference -- it's been delayed until 9:45 a.m. at the earliest.

8:45 a.m. | Happening in about 15 minutes: An Election Day morning update from the Secretary of State's Office.

8:40 a.m. | So far the word from the state continues to be that voting lines are short and moving smoothly.

7:45 a.m. | Gabriel Sterling, the chief operating officer in the Secretary of State's Office, reports a "smooth opening around the state of Georgia" this morning.

7:35 a.m. | Jason Esteves, a Democratic state senator representing parts of the Atlanta Westside, north Atlanta and Cobb County, offers a glimpse at an Atlanta polling site:

7:30 a.m. | We've got one of our first looks of a line at a polling site as polls opened this morning. This from a viewer in Fayette County:

7 a.m. | Polls are now open in the Peach State. They will stay open until 7 p.m. Remember that as long as you're in line by 7 p.m., election offices must allow you to stay and cast your ballot.

Election officials have outlined how, thanks to tweaks in state law on how counties can tabulate and report results, we should see a good bulk of the results in Georgia posted one hour after polls close, at 8 p.m.
