The candidates for the special election for state District 30 (L-R): Ashley Kecskes Godwin, Renae Bell, Bob Smith, Tim Bearden

CARROLLTON, Ga. — Voters in several west Georgia counties went to the polls on Tuesday, Feb. 13, in a special state Senate election.

The election was held to replace former state Sen. Mike Dugan, who resigned in order to run for the U.S. Congress seat being vacated by the outgoing Rep. Drew Ferguson as he isn't seeking reelection.

Four candidates - Timothy Bearden (R), Renae Bell (R), Ashley Kecskes Godwin (D) and Robert “Bob” Smith (R) - were vying to become the next person elected to the seat. The district includes Carrollton and other parts of Carroll, Douglas, Paulding and Haralson counties.

This election featured the new maps recently re-drawn and approved by the state legislature, meaning some voters who cast ballots in District 30 in 2022 were not voting this time -- and vice versa.

The unofficial results show Tim Bearden is the projected winner of the special election for the District 30 seat in the Georgia Senate -- with 59 percent of the vote with all precincts reporting, which means no runoff is necessary.

Bearden is a former state representative from Carrollton who will return to the Gold Dome as a member of the Senate (once certified).
