ATLANTA — Georgia's coveted electoral votes are up for grabs on Tuesday in the 2024 election, with the Peach State considered one of the country's crucial battlegrounds.
Why is Georgia so valuable in the race to become president? It's one of the 10 states with the most electoral votes, and among those -- at least in 2020 -- one of the most competitive.
Here's the breakdown:
How many Electoral College votes does Georgia have?
Georgia has 16 Electoral College votes.
Georgia added one vote, to go from 15 to 16, between the 2008 and 2012 elections.
Where does Georgia rank among states with the most Electoral College votes?
Georgia's 16 Electoral College votes are tied for eighth-most, with neighboring North Carolina.
The states with more Electoral College votes ahead of Georgia are: Ohio (17), Illinois and Pennsylvania (19 each), New York (28), Florida (30), Texas (40) and California (54).
Why does Georgia have 16 Electoral College votes?
It's based on population and Census figures and how those translate to congressional representation.
According to the National Archives website: "Electoral votes are allocated among the States based on the Census. Every State is allocated a number of votes equal to the number of Senators and Representatives in its U.S. Congressional delegation — two votes for its Senators in the U.S. Senate plus a number of votes equal to the number of its Congressional districts."
Thus, Georgia has 16 because of its two senators and 14 House representatives.
